Step Through The Ages

We are very excited to have four different past ages represented at our 'Through the Ages' event this bank holiday weekend! You'll find elements of a Medieval village in the main Farm area, Tudor activities in our unique Moat House, Victorians in the main House and WWII about the manor.

In Kentwell's Great Kitchen, wartime cooks are preparing delicious original dishes from rationed supplies. On the Cedar Lawn a Victorian Garden Fete meets a Wartime Village Fete every afternoon. Try your hand at a Swede shy!

Tickets are still available for Sunday 26th and Monday 27th May 11-5pm. Come and sample the spirit of four of the centuries which made Britain Great!

Here's a glimpse of all the wonderful period costumes on offer this weekend:

The Time Warp at Kentwell

Madness took its toll at Kentwell last night! Our wonderful Medieval, Tudor, Victorian and WWII participants gathered together on the courtyard for a spot of dancing, after a long and successful first day of our 'Through the Ages' event.

Our first day was well received, being the first time we've had four past ages at one event. Visitors commented on the unique and friendly atmosphere, and enjoyed having the opportunity to contrast and compare the different eras.

However, centuries and decades merged, as our participants perfected their pelvis thrusts!

Here's The Time Warp as you've never seen it before...! "It's just a jump to the left.."

Watch our video of The Time Warp here!

Through the Ages continues on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th May, 11-5pm.

May Day Merrymaking

Our May Day celebrations were a roaring success this weekend! For three days, 130 of our wonderful Tudors turned the manor into a hive of activity, as celebrations centered on making noise to wake up spring and encourage crops to grow over the coming year.

Highlights of the weekend included the crowning of the May Queen and her grand procession on horseback, followed by her garlanded attendants and flag-bearing well wishers.

We were lucky enough to have glorious sunshine for the best part of the weekend, which added to the feeling of festivity!

Each day a new May Tree was selected from the woods, which was processed to the Barn Sward and later raised by strong and sturdy men of the manor, hauled up by rope. Crowds of Tudors and visitors then danced around the decorated tree with lively music to accompany them.

It was a fantastic weekend of festivity, music, dancing, plays and processions!

Wilson's Winning Streak

Congratulations to the Wilson family, who were brave enough to take on our infamously challenging Easter Quiz yet again in 2013! With a whopping score of 277 points the Wilsons claimed first prize.

Here they are with their enormous chocolate prize! In past years they have donated the egg to good causes or charities. They have promised to let us know where the delicious prize ends up this year...

The Gores were close behind and were runners up in second place with an equally impressive score of 271 points.

The newly-titled 'Eggheads' Quiz seems to get harder and harder each year - dare you join us next year to pit your wits against our devilishly difficult quiz?

Megan's Marvellous Masterpiece

Our 2012 Easter Egg Design competition was a huge success, but we found it very difficult indeed to choose between all the wonderful entries. We picked Megan's colourful creation as the overall winner because we felt it really stood out. Her design was brought to life in 3-D as part of our 2013 Easter Egg Trail - here is Megan with the finished egg!

Her design was skillfully painted onto a large, hand-crafted wooden egg by Judith Phillips, before being hidden in a very secret spot in the Walled Garden. Visitors had to seek out the colourful egg as part of this year's trail. Megan and her family enjoyed hunting for her egg during our 2013 Festive Easter event.

...Well done Megan!

Prize Egg for Grace Brown!

Prize Egg for Grace Brown!

We were delighted to present an enormous chocolate egg to the winner of our Children's Egg Trail on Easter Monday! Grace Brown, aged 6, from Sudbury, won the prize after competing in our puzzling outdoor trail during our Festive Easter event.

There were a total of eight eggs hidden around Kentwell, each bearing a code number. Once Grace had discovered all of the missing eggs she used the numbers to crack an egg-stra hard code and solve the puzzle, correctly identifying the missing word 'DAFFODIL'.

Here is Judith Phillips presenting the egg, which Grace was very excited to receive. Let's hope she doesn't eat it all at once..!

Live as a Tudor...

Kentwell will soon be looking to recruit volunteers to take part in our Re-Creations of Tudor Life. Volunteers of all ages are needed each year to re-create everyday domestic Tudor life both during the Great Annual Re-Creation and on certain selected other weekends from Easter to the end September at Kentwell.

Over the years thousands have taken part. Most are from the UK but we have had participants from all over the world: most European Countries, USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka and a few from Africa and South America.

No Tudor skills are necessary, although we hope those taking part will in time acquire some such and there is ample opportunity to learn. Enthusiasm, commitment and staying power are initially more vital.

We begin our recruitment process in January, but applicants may write in at any time to: Live as a Tudor, Kentwell Hall, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9BA. Please enclose a large stamped, self-addressed envelope!
